Do You Know Your Website or Virtual Home?

Most people know their homes like the back of their hand. Since your business has a virtual home on the internet, you should be just as familiar with it. Here is a personal story concerning knowing where things are kept in your home and on your website. You just might be able to relate.

As a newlywed, I stayed at home while my husband, a truck driver, was gone all week. Like most new brides, I had difficulty deciding where I wanted my new furniture to sit. One day the sofa looked right under the window but after a few days, it didn’t look so hot. When I moved the sofa, I then “had” to move the chairs because they no longer looked right. When my dad tried to help, I couldn’t really tell him where I wanted it. I had to try it out and see if it worked.

For the first six months, my new husband didn’t wake me with the doorbell or with a kiss, oh no! He woke me, from the living room, with a string of expletives followed by “Kit!” At first, I didn’t know what was going on so I would jump out of bed in a panic and turn on the lights. There on the floor was my husband, rubbing the bumps and bruises. I was confused but didn’t say anything. Then it hit me! He had fallen over or bumped into a piece of furniture, which I had recently moved. The house was no longer organized and arranged as he remembered.

This scene played out quite a few times before he learned to turn the lights on. He found out he couldn’t assume he knew where things were in the dark. After a while, I found the proper place for the furniture and we could both walk through the dark house.

Most of us can keep track of our furniture and can pretty much walk through the house in the dark. We are not always as familiar with our “virtual homes” or websites! Our websites should be just as familiar to us as our homes are.

We need to have everything stored and organized so that we don’t wind up falling over something and making a mess, or worse breaking something. Get to know your files, folders, plugins, graphics, etc. By becoming familiar with where everything is housed, you will be able to do things more efficiently, save server space, and easily out-task things.

If you’re like me, you’ve become accustomed to doing everything for yourself. When it comes time to out-task, you may have a hard time telling another person where to find things. Take time to organize your site so no unsuspecting VA falls over the “virtual sofa” in the dark. You’ll be amazed how smoothly things will work when you know your website or virtual home like the back of your hand.Kit
